Insanity at The Alaska Club – Energy Breeds Energy

Posted by Barbara DuBois | Oct 9, 2015 11:00:00 AM

The hardest part of my work week isn’t going to work. It’s getting up when it’s cold, dark and the bed is incredibly warm, soft and snuggly and I just yearn for one more hour of peaceful slumber. I always factor in at least one hit on the snooze button. So as you can guess, I particularly relish sleeping in on Saturdays. It’s one of the few luxuries in life that doesn’t actually cost me anything. Since Saturday’s are usually packed with the rituals of cooking, cleaning, shopping, laundry and errands, I decided I wanted to ease my way into the day after sleeping-in, enjoying some leisurely coffee and then it was off to the Warm Flow Yoga class at The Alaska Club.

I misread the schedule and got to class right when it was ending and the Insanity class was about to begin. “So why not,” I thought. I’m here – do it! What was cool about this Insanity class was that I wasn’t the only baby boomer in a room full of twenty and thirty something-year-olds. It was a nice collection of all sizes, shapes, ages, ability levels and genders.

This class hearkened back to the 1960s when I used to do exercises with my mom on our carpeted family room floor to the Jack LaLanne Show; projected from a black and white TV no less. Only, it was WAY MORE AMPED UP than that. Well actually, a lot more!! It was more a combination of boot camp, Michael Jackson dance team, U.S.-Olympic ski team, Broadway musical, cheerleader tryout training. And Tammy, the class instructor, did a phenomenal job getting us pumped up with some drills that any and everybody could do. She showed us modifications for moves that were out of some of our set skill levels. There was something for everybody and every interest level.

Tammy moved around the room high-fiving us all and generating some solid esprit de corps. She rotated about assisting by demonstrating and participating, not calling anyone out. It was a “we’re in this together” type of thing. I particularly like the fact that we created a large circle and did some floor exercises that got everybody going to try more, reach higher and extend ourselves in a way that generated some non-competitive team spirit. The music set the tone for high energy output. Since energy breeds energy, I was sufficiently in the mobilized zone to get my Saturday going for the rest of the weekend activities. This could very easily be a great trend for getting me going on all my Saturdays. Thanks Tammy, for a great workout!
