Family & Fitness Go Together Like Birds of a Feather

Let's us set the scene:

You are in the kitchen trying to make dinner for your little brood. Jimmy is running laps around the house because he thinks "open concept kitchen-living area" really means "the perfect place to see if I can break the sound barrier."

Sara, who is usually somewhat sensible, has positioned the cushions from the couch under the stairs to create a soft landing area in case she falls from the banister, which obviously she must climb as if it is some building in a Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible stunt.

And of course baby is bouncing quietly, acting like an angel, but giving you a look that says "yeah, just wait until I'm mobile..."

Kids! Not only do they have this seemingly unending fountain of energy, but they also have a knack for finding pretty creative ways to expend it. To them, the world is their amusement park.

This liveliness, combined with your daily schedules and rhythms, can often feel like juggling chainsaws in a glass museum. The only logical thing to do is to change some of these dynamic forces and create more balance.

That's where the idea of making family fitness a focus in your daily routine can help. Instead of feeling like you're juggling way too many competing demands, try looking for a way to combine them.

There are plenty of ways to do this, both at home and at the gym, and if you're not sure where to start, a good place would be to check out what The Alaska Club can offer you and your family:

Kids' Fitness Classes:

- Kardio Kids
- Youth Yoga
- Fit Kids
- Mighty Mights
- Swim Lessons
- Summer Fun Camp

Family Activity Times:

Family Fun Night - Every 3rd Wednesday of the month
Fitness Fair - Every 3rd Thursday of the month
Yoga In The Park- starting in June

The Alaska Club has many activities geared towards family fitness, providing options that can be done together, or separate under the same roof. For example, while you're doing an adult yoga class (and getting your personal time) your kids can participate in youth yoga or swim lessons.

For details on all of The Alaska Club youth and family activities, visit thealaskaclub.com. Alaska Public Media’s Kids Club is another good resource.

And if the idea of letting your kids get all of that energy out isn't compelling enough, keep in mind that there are other benefits too. Not only will dedicating time to fitness get your kids moving; spending time together will also help strengthen family bonds. For many of us, regular exercise is not only a way to stay fit; it's also a liberating time to process or gain focus of the day, as well as a chance to relieve stress. There are many studies telling us how stress has affected this generation of kids, so it makes sense that exercise and family time can be a strong solution, and certainly the right direction for creating healthier lifestyles.

Even if your kids aren't currently running circles around you (figuratively speaking), helping them build a healthy approach to an active life as they grow, is one of those investments that will pay dividends for years.
