Steve Dunn is a Group Fitness instructor for Insanity and Piyo Live at The Alaska Club. He has come to be known around the gym as PiYo Steve, but he had to earn that nickname.

It all started nearly 5 years ago, when Steve felt tired, overweight, and that he needed a change, “I was about 35-40 pounds heavier than I am now.” That’s when a friend introduced him to Beachbody’s wide range of fitness programs that included Insanity and now PiYo. Steve began to transform his body and mind with the help of Shaun T.’s high-intensity workout program, called Insanity. When he found out that the program would be brought to a group fitness format, he decided to become an Insanity instructor.

With his rediscovered love for fitness, over the next few years, Steve went on to win nearly every Body Building competition in Alaska – including Mr. Alaska. Did we mention that this is all in addition to his day-job as a Police Officer for the city of Anchorage?

In 2013, Steve applied, and was selected from thousands of applicants nationwide to become 1 of 40 Master Trainers for Insanity. During the LA audition, Steve attended a Piyo Strength (now PiYo Live) class, led by creator, Chalene Johnson. Steve recalls, “Chalene noticed my form throughout the class and approached me about becoming a Master Trainer for both Insanity and PiYo.” Steve is now a fitness celebrity, has been in numerous PiYo videos and has a Facebook page devoted to PiYo! Q: Why Piyo?

Piyo Steve: PiYo always keeps your body guessing, one moment you are holding a yoga pose, and the next you are down doing a burpee. It’s a high-intensity workout with a low impact—you don’t even wear sneakers.

Q: How does PiYo help those who are focused on Weight Lifting and Strength Training?

PiYo Steve: PiYo has helped me become more flexible and my recovery time has improved as well. I think it is easy for people to forget about stretching and lengthening their muscles. PiYo Live focuses on both of those as well as strengthening.

Q: How is PiYo different than anything out there currently?

PiYo Steve: PiYo is for everybody! It emphasizes Strength, Core, Balance and Flexibility. It is a workout that challenges athletes and beginners alike because of how dynamic it is.

Steve teaches PiYo Live at The Alaska Club East and West. Come by and get your sweat on with PiYo Steve!
