Go Fish!

Summer in Alaska is the perfect time for outdoor activities, and going fishing is one of them. We are fortunate to have an abundance of different types of fish here, and I hope you had the chance to harvest your own. For the first time this year, I caught my weight in red salmon. While fishing, it was delightful to hear people exchanging recipes on the beach. Another popular topic was the health benefits of salmon.

SUMMER IS HERE!

on May 24, 2021 12:45:48 PM By | Barbara DuBois | 0 Comments | strength training summertime fitness routine
On your mark, get set, go!!! People are getting their campers, kayaks and boats out of storage. They are sorting through their fishing and camping gear and setting the skis and skates in the corner of the garage. Meanwhile, the school year is winding down and the pace of summer is about to kick in with all the usual ecstatic expectations of living in America’s best playground. People spend thousands of dollars to come here in the summer and take part in what we literally just fall out of bed to do. Memorial Day weekend is the usual summertime kick off event and the roads will be clogged - mostly Alaskans eager to get outside and soak in all the natural glories the state has to offer.

Fishing, Running, and Sunshine: The Keys to a Successful Ski Season

Summertime in Alaska is crazy. We all go into overdrive, and it seems like for most of us, the level of activity ramps up with the increase in sunlight. As a professional cross-country ski racer, summertime is actually the part of the year when I have to train the most. In our sport, it takes so long to make improvements that we need every workout, every day we can get, in order to get faster by next season. We train May through November, then compete almost every weekend December-March while training every day to prepare for the big events. After the Olympics in Korea in 2018, where I finished a career best 6th place in the Team Sprint event, I am more motivated than ever to train as hard as possible. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this means I somehow have to find a way to mesh the demands of training two or even three times a day with the summertime Alaskan lifestyle.

Less Screen Time, More Play Time

Just two weeks ago, I attended an education conference in New York City on learning and brain activity in youth and children. The chief concern at this conference was the preponderance of screen time, primarily cell phone usage, teachers witness among their students. While studies have not made a direct correlation to the rise of anxiety and depression seen among children and youth to electronic device habits, bullying and obesity have been positively correlated to cell phone usage by these groups. Consistent with these findings is a greater sense of social alienation found among children and teens who are now logging long hours on their electronic devices and becoming sleep-deprived in the process.

How I Get Ready For Mountain Running Season

Believe it or not, spring is my favorite time of year to train. Despite coming off a long and fatiguing ski racing season, I am always excited to get back to springtime in Alaska. The weather is generally pretty amazing at this time of year- lots of bluebird days that make for great crust skiing in the morning, awesome trail running in the afternoon, and even better corn skiing in the evenings. With such perfect conditions its easy to get carried away recreating and neglect the body- especially when it comes to running. As someone who has struggled with countless overuse injuries throughout the duration of my career, its really important for me to build into my running progression. I’ve found that if I’m not careful about gradually increasing both distance and pace, my minor springtime tweaks turn into long-term injuries that prevent me from training/racing later in the summer. Picking out the right pair shoes from Skinny Raven also helps avoid injuries further down the road.

Even the most fitness and diet-conscious among us struggle when it comes to traveling. Not only are you nowhere near your gym or your familiar running paths, but you’re also tempted by high-caloric foods and unable to prepare your meals the way you’re used to. “Dear journal, those burpees were really hard and I’m never doing them again”. Okay, that’s not exactly what we mean when we say journal the journey. What we’re really talking about is documenting your workout, including reps, sets, weights, exercises, intensity level, date and time.
