Sweat Smarter: The Health Benefits of Sauna Sessions

Posted by Tracy Dumas, TAC Director of Marketing & PR | Feb 17, 2025 12:46:55 PM

Getting your sweat on doesn’t always mean logging miles on the treadmill or lifting that heavy load on the weight room floor. Sometimes working up a good sweat is as simple as relaxing in a dry sauna. Think that’s beneficial only on your rest days? Think again.

A recent study from Sweden involving more than 900 adults found that frequent trips to the sauna were associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and overall improved health. Participants also noted that they had less pain, more energy, improved mental health, and satisfying sleep patterns. The increased sweating and body temperature that a sauna session produces is thought to mimic physical activity which also done on a regular basis, promotes energy, better sleep, and overall mental health. In addition, the study noted that regular sauna sessions were found to aid in the process of recovery after a workout by increasing blood flow to your muscles.

The frequency of and time spent in your sauna sessions should be based on your unique health conditions and needs. Most healthy adults can use a sauna for 10-15 minutes up to a few times a week to gain benefits. It’s important to be hydrated before hitting the sauna and make sure it’s ok with your doctor, should you have any underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular or respiratory issues.

While some people enjoy the sauna for the heat, meditative purposes, and good vibes, others enjoy it for the social aspect. Instead of catching up with your friend on the phone, ask them to meet you at the club for a sauna sesh instead.

Whether it’s sauna, red-light therapy, cryotherapy, or massage, incorporating recovery is an important part of any health and wellness routine. The Alaska Club offers a plethora of recovery options across our network, many of which are included in your membership or can be enjoyed at a discount with Membership Plus.
