Yoga In The Park & WNBA Star Kelsey Griffin

Posted by Kelsey Griffin, WNBA | Jun 27, 2016 6:02:23 PM

Since I was last in Alaska a lot of exciting things have happened, I became an AustraCard_1392_YITP_Kelsey-FB.jpglian citizen so I now hold duel citizenships with the US and Australia. Part of becoming an Australian citizen made me eligible for the Australian opals - the Australian national basketball team. I made the final 20 but was released from the team in April.

I decided to take this WNBA season off to focus on training with the Opals and to help my body recover from a severe hamstring tear. It has allowed me to give my body a much needed rest and assisted me in rebuilding my strength and fitness.

My Australian team, the Bendigo Spirit, didn't make the finals this past season but have been heavily recruiting to be back up the top for the 2016/2017 season!

During this off season I have been working for Peak Sport Australia helping to promote the brand throughout the country. It's been very exciting recently as they just signed NBA champion Matthew Dellevadova to the brand joining myself as a Peak Athlete. I'm loving bringing this amazing clothing and footwear range to Australia!

Not only have I enjoyed my role at Peak Sport, but also became an Otis Foundation Ambassador helping to bring retreat locations to women and families of breast cancer patients all over Australia (http://www.otisfoundation.org.au).  Most recently I've jumped on board The Discovery Center as an Ambassador to get kids excited about science again (http://www.discovery.asn.au).

I'm really enjoying my work with the McKern Foundation's Fresh Fruit Friday program where 800 kilograms of fruit are donated each week to 30 schools in Bendigo, VIC and I get to talk to the students and explain the importance of healthy living.  Along with doing educational talks in these schools I've been doing small basketball clinics to help kids stay active.

I love the work I get to do in Australia, but always love coming back to Alaska.  I'm very grateful to the Alaska Club for letting me to continue my training so I can come back and visit my family, but still continue to improve and get ready for my upcoming season!

Join and instructor Heidi me this Wednesday, June 29th on the Park Strip in Anchorage for Yoga in the Park, sponsored by The Alaska Club. Come practice with us!
