Katie Fletcher: Junior Bodybuilder & Her Journey to the Crystal Cup

Posted by The Alaska Club | Mar 19, 2015 11:14:00 AM

Katie Fletcher is now 12 years old, but she has been surrounded by fitness for a long time.  Katie’s mom, Ginger Graham, is a Competitive Body Builder.  Here is what Katie has to say about her fitness journey…

“I knew that I wanted to do JR. Fitness as soon as I went to the 2013 Crystal Cup bodybuilding competition. I was there supporting my mom, Ginger Graham, because she was competing. At the very beginning of the show, I saw a couple of girls doing gymnastic moves, dance, and things that you need to be strong in order to do. I instantly thought that I wanted to do that. My mom found me a team to practice with, Fit In AK.

I started training in January 2014 for two shows that were in April. In that short amount of time I had before my first competition, I had to be able to do a v-sit or straddle-sit, toe-touch, high kick, pushup (I do a one arm pushup because it seems more impressive), a straddle jump, and the splits because those were mandatory moves that I had to perform on stage.  My first show, I placed 3rd. The second show, I got first place. I really enjoyed those first two competitions so I decided to do the Heart of Alaska bodybuilding competition 2014 (A competition in Fairbanks, Alaska). I placed 3rd in the competition. I really wanted to start getting at least second place so I kept practicing. At the 2014 Crystal Cup bodybuilding competition, I placed 3rd again. Then, at the 2014 Midnight Sun bodybuilding competition, I placed 2nd and..... I also got a really cool picture from it!

In 2015, I hope to be placing better because now I'm working even harder. I really like coming to The Alaska Club and being able to work out, but also being able to practice my routine in a space that is almost as large as the stage that I compete on. I think that it really helps me improve and get used to being in such a large space that is about the size that I will be competing on.”
