Thanksgiving time is a season of gratitude - recognizing and acknowledging people or moments that make us aware of the goodness around us. At The Alaska Club, we are grateful for you, our members and for our community that supports each other with fitness and wellness.
I was in a Group Power class last month where the instructor brought back an old release from 2014. At the end of class, some of my fellow ‘groupies’ who, like me had been taking the class for many years commented on how tough the workout was; an oldie but a goodie, as one woman said. Another marveled at how she was grateful for still being able to do a workout that she could do when she was in her early 40s. I hadn’t thought about it that way before, but she was right. Appreciating your body for what it can do for you and being able to move your body in strong ways is something I am grateful for. I am also grateful for the community of instructors, trainers, and other members both in the regular group fitness classes I attend as well as the friendly faces who greet me whenever I come to the club workout (shoutout to the early morning crew at West!).
Practicing gratitude comes in many forms. Whether it’s with a smile, a thank you note, volunteer work, witnessing a beautiful sunset, or appreciation for your life, gratitude can have positive benefits for both your physical and mental health.
· Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can lead to lower blood pressure, a stronger immune system, and better sleep. *
· Gratitude can improve your relationships by motivating us to show up for one another whether it’s your family, friendships, community, or workplace. *
· Gratitude can enhance your self-esteem. * According to one study, practicing gratitude was associated with lower levels of depression and an increase in self-worth and confidence.
The holidays are a busy time and it’s easy to go through your daily routine and not think twice about gratitude. It might take a bit of effort, but I challenge you to practice small acts of gratitude which can lead to big changes in not only your life, but also in the lives of those you care about. This Thanksgiving season, take a moment to reflect, what are you grateful for?
